Aberdeen is a city brimming with pubs to suit every age group, from student up through the years, and every taste, from traditional to contemporary. Most pubs serve food and we feature some of the best pub grub the city and its surrounding areas have to offer.
Traditional pub food is a selection of hearty British fare, for example steak and kidney pie, bangers and mash and fish and chips, with perhaps a ploughman's lunch or ham salad as a lighter option. This type of food can be made in large quantities and are popular British staples.
Some British pubs over recent years have rebranded themselves as gastropubs and emphasise the quality of ingredients and produce used. They food served is seen as equivalent to a good restaurant standard, sometimes better. Generally the ambience is relaxed and the gastropub has become the ideal venue for combining the perfect pint with an excellent meal.
Some pubs specialise in a particular cuisine, for example Thai food. They cater for a niche market and are extremely popular. Others may have in-house entertainment and promote weekly or monthly live bands or perhaps comedians.
Another popular form of entertainment is the pub quiz which brings groups together in an informal setting with a competitive edge, as with pub darts or football teams.
Many of Aberdeen's central pubs are located close to city centre theatres, cinemas and other night spots making them the ideal venues to enjoy a drink and a bite to eat before taking in some of the city's entertainment.
Pub grub has improved beyond recognition over the past decade and Aberdeen's large assortment of pubs, the best of which are featured here, serve differing styles of food to be truly proud of.
